HoldSpace (holdspace, holdspacearc, HS)

Reading, thinking and talking about things that don’t seem to ‘fit’ in architecture school.

Holdspace was founded to allow for discussions which extend from the study of architecture, space and spatial politics. Holdspace content, posts and events evidence a forthright position in favour of foregrounding minority issues, untold histories and lived experiences. Discussions are strictly informal, discretionary and transparent in terms of programming, affiliations and operations. Holdspace is an independent platform, funded primarily through donations and grants, without institutional affiliations.

Holdspace discussions aim to be safe and non-judgemental spaces, validating all positions while allowing participants to maintain their own. To allow for this, some events will have restricted audiences. In order for this platform to work as intended, it is important to respect the need for —and importance of— each of these within the whole, even when such restrictions would exclude our own participation.

The nature of Holdspace discussions depart from, or are adjacent to academic ones; there is no impetus for being ‘useful’, or ‘productive’, instead leaving room for reflection and curiosity.  Topics and agendas may arise directly as a response to questions in the academy, which the academy itself may not be able to accommodate in its necessarily proscribed methods of instruction, and which may have no specific metric within the professional world.
